Data domains group related data into clear, understandable areas based on how the information is created, used, and governed. These domains provide a common framework for managing data consistently while supporting operational needs, academic activities, research, and strategic decision‑making.
Data Domains at IU
Affiliate: Any data associated with people who have an affiliate status at Indiana University.
Advancement (Donor & Alumni): Records associated with alumni and donor information including administrative information associated with employees, scholarships, etc.
Employee: Records related to employment, position classification, employee relations, administrative health data including FMLA and worker’s compensation, employment eligibility and verification, data collected during the hiring process; Also includes faculty annual reviews, promotion and tenure recommendations.
Facilities: Building, space and utility data including classroom utilization; GIS maps and related data.
Financial and Budget Data: Payroll, chart of account, student loan information tax reporting, budget information, supplier contract information and treasury data including credit card transactions.
Health: Patient data or member of health plan information and student health information including immunization records, doctor notes, and physicals for athletes.
International Programs Data: International partnership agreements and student exchange program information, Regulated data associated with immigration tracking, employment, immigration position review, Study abroad program and student participant data.
Information Technology: log files, credentials, IP addresses, other information systems information that could compromise IU systems.
Learning Management/Learning Analytics: eLearning data maintained by the university including, but not limited to, LMS page view/behavioral data, coursework, assignments, exams, instant messages, class recordings, course grade. Also includes information used in the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs, unless the use can be classified as research.
Library: Library collections and circulation information such as patron bills/fines, patron contact information, current checkouts/holds, patron records with identifiers, library acquisition records, and library purchase orders.
Contracts and Grants / Research Administration: Data related to research grant proposals, budget development, sponsors and award information. Also, includes negotiation information for proposed research projects including material transfer agreements, proprietary information and non-disclosure agreements.
Purchasing: Data related to university goods and services procurement activity including supplier information, sourcing, contracts and payments.
Research Compliance: Research project details needed for compliance review and approval including animal care and use, biosafety, and human subjects protocols; research involving export controls, conflict of interest disclosures, and research committee membership data.
Research Data: Research data such as field studies, genomic sequences or scientific papers, also including trade secrets, patent application, and participant identification information.
Student: Academic, advising, and biodemographic records directly related to the student and maintained by IU such as transcripts, GPA, rosters, course materials, advisor notes, scholarship, financial aid, and student billing information.
Travel: Information about trips taken on behalf of IU and may include students.
